Abstract

This community service activity aimed to facilitate the early detection of dental caries and to improve knowledge and skills in maintaining oral health among preschool children. The implementation method applied promotive, preventive, and early detection approaches through audiovisual-based oral health education, demonstrations of proper tooth-brushing techniques using phantom models, supervised group tooth-brushing practice, and dental examinations using the def-t index. The activity involved 242 preschool children in Banuhampu District, Agam Regency. The results showed that 52.89% of children were in the good category (def-t ≤2), while 47.11% were in the poor category (def-t >2), with a mean def-t index of 2.55, indicating a relatively high level of caries experience. The program also produced baseline data on children’s oral health status and successfully implemented educational and practical activities. In conclusion, the integration of early detection, education, and practical training effectively provides an overview of children’s oral health and serves as a foundation for sustainable promotive and preventive efforts
